MONTGOMERY, AL – Jamarcus Dewayne Hatcher, 21, of Montgomery, Alabama, will spend the next three decades behind bars after a federal judge handed down a 360-month sentence for a brazen armed robbery that shook the small community of Hope Hull in April 2023. The sentence, announced today by U.S. Attorney Jonathan S. Ross, reflects not only the severity of this single crime, but a pattern of violent behavior, authorities say.
The April 6, 2023, robbery unfolded at a gas station in Hope Hull. According to court documents and video evidence, Hatcher walked up to the counter, a pistol already in his hand. He didn’t bother with subtlety, immediately pointing the weapon at the cashier and demanding, “give me all the money.” The cashier complied, handing over approximately $90 in cash. But Hatcher wasn’t finished.
Driven by a clear intent to obstruct justice, Hatcher then demanded to know the location of the security cameras. He then proceeded to the side office area and fired a shot into what he believed to be the security DVR, attempting to erase evidence of his crime. He fled the scene on foot, leaving behind a trail of fear and destruction. The incident was captured, in part, before Hatcher disabled the recording device.
Hatcher pleaded guilty on January 22, 2024, to both Hobbs Act robbery and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. But the sentencing hearing on May 1, 2024, revealed a much wider scope of criminal activity. The judge considered five separate incidents – armed robberies and attempted armed robberies – targeting gas station convenience stores and walk-up restaurants in March and April of 2023, all allegedly involving Hatcher. These prior incidents factored heavily into the length of the sentence.
The investigation was a collaborative effort, spearheaded by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with crucial support from the Montgomery Police Department and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office also contributed to the case. Assistant United States Attorney John J. Geer was the prosecutor, successfully building a case that secured a substantial prison term for Hatcher.
This sentence sends a clear message: armed robbery is a serious federal crime, and those who endanger lives for quick cash will face severe consequences. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any further developments. Residents in the Montgomery area can rest a little easier knowing this violent offender is off the streets for the foreseeable future.
