Houma Man Pleads Guilty to ChildPornography Possession
Michael Chauvin, a 31-year-old resident of Houma, Louisiana, has entered a guilty plea in federal court for the possession of child pornography. According to U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite, Chauvin faces a harsh sentence for his despicable actions.
The investigation into Chauvin’s activities began when law enforcement officials executed a search warrant at his residence on August 7, 2015. During the search, authorities seized numerous electronic devices that contained graphic and disturbing images of children as young as two years old engaged in sexually explicit conduct. A forensic examination of these devices uncovered approximately 1,354 images and 779 videos.
Chauvin is alleged to have obtained the majority of this material through a peer-to-peer file sharing program. The court documents also indicate that Chauvin had been actively searching for, downloading, and saving these explicit materials on his electronic devices.
For his crime, Chauvin faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, and lifetime supervised release. Additionally, he may be required to register as a sex offender. Sentencing has been set for April 12, 2017, before U.S. District Judge Kurt D. Engelhardt.
This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative aimed at combating the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The program coordinates federal, state, and local resources to apprehend individuals who exploit children online and identify victims.
U.S. Attorney Polite commended the work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in this investigation. Assistant United States Attorneys Jordan Ginsberg and J. Ryan McLaren are handling the prosecution.
