HOUSTON – In a stark reminder of the consequences for illegal gun possession, Avery Frank Bass Jr., a 22-year-old local man, has been sentenced to federal prison following his conviction of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The sentence was announced by U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani.
Bass pleaded guilty on March 22nd, facing the statutory maximum of 15 years in federal prison, which will be immediately followed by three years of supervised release. The court emphasized that Bass posed a significant threat to public safety.
This sentence is a result of Bass’s arrest as part of the Houston Violent Crime Initiative, a program launched in September 2023 aimed at reducing violent crime through federal law enforcement efforts.
Local law enforcement arrested Bass for aggravated robbery in August 2023. During the arrest, they discovered a loaded American Tactical AR pistol and a loaded 9mm Glock 17 on the driver’s side floorboard where Bass had been seated. His criminal history revealed three prior felony convictions for robbery, all involving firearms.
Hamdani emphasized the importance of removing violent individuals from communities, stating that the initiative is making progress in reducing firearms crimes in the Southern District of Texas.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, FBI, and the Houston Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kelly Zenon-Matos, along with Trial Attorneys Ralph Paradiso and Shelia Lafferty from the Justice Department’s Violent Crime and Racketeering Section, prosecuted the case.
