Houston Drug Kingpin Gets 27 Years in Federal Prison
HOUSTON, TX – Dhevani Mitchell, a 21-year-old Houston resident, will spend the next 27 years of his life behind bars after receiving a hefty sentence for his role in a large-scale poly-drug distribution conspiracy. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge George C. Hanks Jr., sends a clear message: peddling poison in the Bayou City comes with a steep price.
Mitchell pleaded guilty on December 4, 2023, admitting to supplying massive quantities of methamphetamine, cocaine, and fentanyl from his Houston residence between February and March 2021. This wasn’t a small-time operation; authorities uncovered a full-blown drug warehouse, and the judge made it clear that Mitchell’s actions had “destroyed lives and families” and posed a significant threat to the community.
The bust, which occurred on March 31, 2021, yielded a staggering haul: approximately 10.9 kilograms of methamphetamine, 1.267 kilograms of China white heroin/gray death heroin, 260 grams of suspected fentanyl, a large assortment of pressed pills, and, adding insult to injury, five firearms. Mitchell was found in a back bedroom, clutching a black Stoeger Cougar 9-millimeter handgun hidden under a pillow. A Remington 5501 .22 caliber rifle and ammunition were also recovered from the scene.
Judge Hanks didn’t mince words, stating that Mitchell continued to deal drugs even after receiving multiple warnings and would undoubtedly continue to do so if given the opportunity. The 324-month sentence – immediately followed by five years of supervised release – reflects the court’s belief that Mitchell is a dangerous individual who needed to be removed from the streets. The sheer volume of narcotics seized paints a picture of a well-established operation, fueled by greed and a blatant disregard for human life.
The investigation was spearheaded by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) as part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) Strike Force Initiative, with crucial assistance from the Houston Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety. This collaborative effort highlights the importance of multi-agency task forces in dismantling complex criminal enterprises. The OCDETF program focuses on disrupting and dismantling the most significant drug traffickers and criminal organizations.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael Day and Christine Lu successfully prosecuted the case. Mitchell remains in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility. This case serves as a stark reminder that the Grimy Times will continue to relentlessly expose and report on the underbelly of Houston’s criminal world, holding those responsible accountable for their actions.
