Houston Man Gets 12.5 Years for Attacking Federal Officer
HOUSTON – A brazen attack on a federal officer in downtown Houston has landed 38-year-old Justin Wade Prophet in federal prison for 150 months. U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani announced the sentencing, capping a case that exposed a volatile encounter and significant property damage.
The incident unfolded on October 26, 2023, in the early morning hours outside the federal courthouse. Prophet, a Houston resident, began his rampage by smashing a window with a long metal pole. He didn’t stop there. He then moved across the street, shattering another window and illegally entering the building. Inside, Prophet attempted to assault a commuter on their way to work and caused further destruction.
Federal Protective Service officers quickly confronted Prophet. The situation escalated rapidly when Prophet turned on them, striking one officer with the same metal pole he used to break the windows. The officer, fearing for their life, discharged their weapon, hitting Prophet in the lower extremities. Law enforcement immediately secured the scene and rushed Prophet to a local hospital for treatment.
Prophet pleaded guilty on March 25th. U.S. District Judge David Hittner, while acknowledging Prophet’s difficult upbringing and documented mental health struggles, delivered a firm sentence. The judge recognized the severity of the offense demanded a substantial term of imprisonment, emphasizing the need to uphold the rule of law and ensure public safety. The court stated this was one of the most challenging cases they had presided over, but ultimately felt the sentence was justified.
Following the sentencing, Prophet remains in custody awaiting transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility. The investigation was a joint effort by the Department of Homeland Security – Federal Protective Service and the Houston Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Barri Dean skillfully prosecuted the case, securing the conviction and lengthy sentence.
