Idaho Woman Sentenced for Flathead Reservation Meth and Fentanyl Trafficking

MISSOULA, MT – In a hard-hitting blow against drug trafficking on the Flathead Indian Reservation, Nicole Lynn Shain, 40, from Idaho, has been sentenced to 132 months in federal prison for selling methamphetamine and fentanyl. The sentence also includes a seven-year supervised release term following her incarceration.

Shain, who pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute the drugs in April 2025, faced U.S. District Judge Donald W. Molloy for sentencing. According to court documents, law enforcement officers were on patrol in Pablo, MT, on July 1, 2024, when they noticed a black SUV with Idaho plates parked near a hotbed of substance abuse. The SUV vanished upon their return, only to reappear several hours later in Ronan, MT, with Shain as its sole occupant.

During a surveillance operation, investigators observed Shain dispose of a piece of tin foil with drug residue on it. A subsequent search warrant revealed 26.8 grams of methamphetamine, several grams of fentanyl powder, and 1,092 pills laced with the deadly substance inside the SUV. The sheer volume of drugs far exceeded typical user amounts, leading to Shain’s conviction.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Lowney prosecuted the case on behalf of the government, while Homeland Security Investigations and Flathead Tribal Police conducted the investigation. Shain had prior convictions for distributing dangerous drugs in Idaho before this high-profile arrest.

This sentence sends a stark message to those who would traffic drugs on tribal lands, demonstrating the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s commitment to cracking down on illegal drug activity wherever it occurs. The Flathead Indian Reservation has been under siege by illegal substances, and efforts to combat the crisis are now more urgent than ever.

The case serves as a reminder of the relentless fight against drug trafficking in rural America, where communities are often left vulnerable to this insidious threat. Shain’s conviction is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies working tirelessly to keep dangerous drugs off our streets and out of the hands of innocent citizens.
