Identity thieves are targeting unsuspecting taxpayers in Alabama, preying on their financial information to file false tax returns and claim fraudulent refunds. The scam has gained momentum since the start of tax season on January 30, 2013.
According to George L. Beck, Jr., United States Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama, the government is cracking down on these identity thieves and fraudulent tax preparers. In a press conference held at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Montgomery, Alabama, on January 30, 2013, Beck was joined by Veronica Hyman-Pillot, Internal Revenue Special Agent in Charge, and Clayton Slay, U.S. Secret Service Resident Agent in Charge.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office has received reports of numerous cases involving identity theft and fraudulent tax preparers. These individuals often pose as legitimate tax preparers, gathering sensitive financial information from unsuspecting taxpayers before filing false tax returns and claiming large refunds.
“Taxpayers need to be vigilant and take steps to protect their financial information,” said Beck. “We urge anyone who has been a victim of identity theft or has suspicions of fraudulent tax preparers to report it to the authorities immediately.”
The press conference, which was attended by local and national media, provided an opportunity for the public to learn about the warning signs of identity theft and how to avoid becoming a victim. Press releases and handouts were made available to attendees.
