
In a shocking case of identity theft, 37-year-old Melinda Boisseau of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, was sentenced to two years in prison for stealing the identities of others to file false tax returns.
On January 19, 2017, Boisseau was sentenced by U.S. Attorney David Rivera in the Middle District of Tennessee, who announced her punishment. She will also serve two years of supervised release after her prison term.
Boisseau pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated identity theft and filing false claims in tax returns on May 10, 2016.
According to court documents, between June 2010 and February 2011, Boisseau filed as many as 66 fraudulent tax returns using stolen personal identification information and fake employer and wage information.
She was ordered to pay restitution to the IRS in the amount of $53,289.
The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie N. Toussaint.
Boisseau’s sentence serves as a warning to those who engage in such illegal activities, and we will continue to shine a light on these crimes and bring those responsible to justice.
