Threats Through Social Media Land Illinois Man in Prison

Rodney Hanson, 37, of Illinois, has been sentenced to 10 months in federal prison for sending a threatening message through social media to a West Virginia law enforcement officer.

The crime occurred on January 8, 2019, following a police-involved shooting in Putnam County. Hanson pleaded guilty in May 2021 to transmitting an interstate threatening communication.

According to Acting United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston, Hanson’s actions were a serious threat to public safety. ‘The sentence imposed by Judge Chambers reflects the seriousness of this crime and the need to protect law enforcement officers who serve and protect our communities,’ Johnston stated.

The investigation was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), with Assistant United States Attorney Ryan A. Keefe handling the prosecution. United States District Judge Robert C. Chambers imposed the sentence.

Hanson’s actions were not only a threat to the officer, but also to the community at large. ‘We will not tolerate threats against law enforcement officers,’ Keefe said. ‘This sentence sends a clear message that such behavior will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.’

The case is a reminder that social media can be a powerful tool for both good and evil. In this case, Hanson’s actions had serious consequences. ‘We urge everyone to use social media responsibly and to report any suspicious activity to the authorities,’ Johnston concluded.
