PITTSBURGH, PA – A brazen crime has shaken the community in McKees Rocks, PA. India Schatzman, a 49-year-old resident of McKees Rocks, has pleaded guilty to the theft of mail by an officer or employee of the United States Postal Service.
In a shocking turn of events, Schatzman, a postal employee at the Pittsburgh Process and Distribution Center, was caught red-handed on December 30, 2022, stealing a Visa gift card from a greeting card intended for a recipient in the State of Washington.
According to court documents, Schatzman’s actions were caught on camera by inspectors of the Postal Inspection Service. The defendant’s guilty plea marks a significant blow to the trust between postal workers and the communities they serve.
As part of her plea agreement, Schatzman is facing a maximum sentence of not more than five years in prison and a fine of not more than $250,000. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed will depend on the seriousness of the offense and Schatzman’s prior criminal history.
Judge William S. Stickman, IV, has scheduled sentencing for April 19, 2024, at 1:30 p.m. The court has continued Schatzman’s bond pending sentencing.
Assistant United States Attorney Carolyn J. Bloch is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government. The United States Postal Inspection Service conducted the investigation that led to the prosecution of Schatzman.
