Johnstown, Pa. – The grim halls of the Federal Correctional Institution in Loretto have once again become a stage for justice as Edwin Manuel Guzman, 35, faces a federal indictment for possession of a prohibited object.
Guzman was charged by a grand jury in Johnstown, accused of having Buprenorphine within the prison walls on December 22, 2016. The drug is known for its potent pain relief properties and has become a tool of choice for those seeking to circumvent prison regulations.
Should Guzman be found guilty, he could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 or both. Such sentences are typically meted out under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which consider the severity of the offense as well as the defendant’s prior criminal record.
The Assistant United States Attorney Stephanie L. Haines is leading the prosecution against Guzman. This case marks a significant step for the Laurel Highlands Resident Agency of the FBI and the Special Investigative Staff of the Federal Correctional Institution, which conducted the investigation that led to the charges.
It’s important to remember that an indictment is merely an accusation. Until proven guilty, Guzman is presumed innocent under the principles of American justice.
