Colin Jackson, 39, of San Francisco, was found guilty of conspiring to defraud an automobile insurance company by submitting a fraudulent claim for a wrecked car in 2018. Jackson, along with co-conspirator Kirill Afanasyev, worked together to scam the insurer out of nearly $27,000. The scheme involved Jackson obtaining an insurance policy on an undrivable car and then submitting a fake accident claim to the insurer.
The jury’s verdict came after a seven-day trial before U.S. District Judge Trina L. Thompson. The evidence presented at trial showed that Jackson had made several misstatements in his application for the insurance policy, including underestimating his annual mileage on the car. This was not the first time Jackson had been involved in such a scheme, as he and Afanasyev had previously obtained a payout of approximately $30,000 on another wrecked car in 2017.
Jackson’s conviction is part of a larger federal investigation into automobile insurance frauds and an unrelated arson conspiracy. He is scheduled to appear before Judge Thompson for sentencing on September 25, 2026. The case was investigated by the FBI and the IRS, with United States Attorney Craig Missakian, FBI Acting Special Agent in Charge Matthew Cobo, and IRS Criminal Investigation Oakland Field Office Special Agent in Charge Linda Nguyen announcing the conviction.
The investigation has resulted in more than a dozen defendants either pleading guilty or being convicted at trial. Jackson’s co-conspirator, Kirill Afanasyev, had previously been convicted, and another defendant, Jose Badillo, had pleaded guilty to participating in a separate arson conspiracy.
