GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Melissa Ilene Williams, a 46-year-old insurance policy salesperson from Dike, Iowa, was today sentenced to more than three years in federal prison for her cunning scheme that defrauded two insurance companies out of over $170,000 in sales commissions.
In what has been deemed a brazen act of white-collar crime, Williams pleaded guilty on March 3, 2014, to one count of mail fraud. She admitted to obtaining advanced sales commissions by submitting falsified life insurance applications under the names of individuals who had no knowledge of these applications. The fraudulent activities took place between July 2011 and January 2012.
Williams confessed that she secretly paid the initial premiums on the policies, ensuring the insurance companies remained unaware of their fraud. United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade sentenced Williams to 41 months’ imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release. The court also ordered her to pay a total of $175,147.32 in restitution to the victim insurance companies.
Williams is currently released on bond and will surrender to the Bureau of Prisons at an unspecified date. Assistant United States Attorney Peter Deegan prosecuted the case, while the Insurance Fraud Bureau of the Iowa Department of Commerce, Division of Insurance, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation.
