Iowa Man Pleads Guilty to Gun Charge After Meth, Handgun Found During Traffic Stop
A 44-year-old Martell man has pleaded guilty to a federal charge of being an unlawful drug user in possession of a firearm, after a loaded handgun and methamphetamine were found during a traffic stop in October 2020.
Timothy James Hensley, of Martell, Iowa, was convicted of one count of being an unlawful drug user in possession of a firearm. At a plea hearing, Hensley admitted to unlawfully possessing a gun on October 19, 2020.
The discovery of the gun and methamphetamine was made during a search of Hensley’s person and a backpack found on the passenger’s seat by a Linn County Sheriff’s Deputy. The Deputy had stopped Hensley for driving a truck with a license plate belonging to a different vehicle. During the stop, it was also discovered that Hensley was barred from driving and had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear for court.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime through a collaborative effort between law enforcement and community stakeholders. PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with prevention and reentry programs to address the root causes of crime.
Hensley faces a possible maximum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release following any imprisonment. Sentencing before United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams will be set after a presentence report is prepared.
Hensley remains in custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing. The case was investigated by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Dan Chatham.
The case file number is 21-CR-00036-CJW-MAR. For more information, visit the U.S. Attorney’s Office website at https://ecf.iand.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/login.pl.
