WALTER JAMES HULIT, the 37-year-old Sioux City, Iowa resident, has been handed a 24-month federal prison sentence for failing to register as a sex offender. The United States Attorney Lesley A. Woods announced the sentence on August 7, 2025, marking a harsh penalty for Hulit’s repeated violations of registration laws.
Hulit was initially convicted of sexual abuse of a minor in June 2020 and served 41 months’ imprisonment. He was also sentenced to a five-year term of supervised release. However, after his release on June 28, 2022, Hulit failed to update his registration information, leading to the recent charges against him.
The offense came to light when Winnebago Children and Family Services reported that Hulit was living at an address in Winnebago, Nebraska. A subsequent investigation by the U.S. Marshals Service revealed that he had not registered at this location as required. Hulit knew his duty but deliberately avoided registration between October 2024 and November 2024.
This case is a part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The program, led by the Department of Justice, aims to locate, apprehend, and prosecute those who exploit children online and identify victims. The investigation was conducted by the United States Marshals Service, emphasizing the coordinated efforts between federal agencies in combating sex crimes.
Hulit’s sentence includes a six-year term of supervised release following his prison term. His failure to adhere to registration requirements has once again landed him behind bars, underscoring the severity of the law and the consequences faced by those who do not comply with sex offender registration regulations.
