Michigan Man Sentenced for ISIS Ties

A 25-year-old Lansing man has been sentenced to 98 months in federal prison for conspiring to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), a designated foreign terrorist organization.

U.S. Attorney Andrew Birge announced the sentencing of Mohamud Muse, who was found guilty of conspiring to provide material support to ISIS. Following his release from prison, Muse was ordered to serve 10 years of supervised release.

The government had sought a sentence of 198 months in prison, consistent with the sentence recommended by the United States Sentencing Guidelines. However, the court found that Muse was more culpable than his co-defendant, Muse Muse, and departed downward from the guideline sentence due to Muse’s lack of prior criminal history.

Muse was arrested on January 21, 2019, at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids, Michigan, after his brother Muse Muse checked in for a flight to Mogadishu, Somalia, with the goal of joining ISIS. Their relative, Mohamed Haji, was also arrested for conspiring to provide material support to ISIS.

The investigation revealed that between December 2018 and January 2019, Muse Muse coordinated with an individual he believed to be a Somali ISIS fighter to wire funds to be used to purchase airline tickets for travel to Mogadishu, Somalia. All three defendants picked up money to provide Muse Muse the funds to travel to join ISIS, and they all pledged allegiance to ISIS in recorded videos.

Muse admitted to conspiring with his relatives and co-defendants to provide material support to ISIS, and he acknowledged that they were planning to travel overseas to join the terrorist organization.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with assistance from the Michigan State Police, Kent County Sheriff’s Office, Eaton County Sheriff’s Office, and other law enforcement agencies.

Muse Muse was sentenced to 78 months in prison for his role in the offense, and Haji awaits sentencing on September 22, 2021.

In a statement, U.S. Attorney Andrew Birge praised the law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation and thanked the court for its hard work in bringing the case to a close.
