GRIM CITY, MS – In a severe blow to the streets of Jackson, Domique Desha Mathews, 30, was handed a 30-month federal prison sentence for illegal firearm possession. During a high-profile traffic stop by the Ridgeland Police Department, Mathews was discovered in possession of two firearms, including a Glock pistol equipped with a machinegun conversion device – a clear violation of federal and state law.
Mathews’ previous felony conviction for attempted house burglary made his possession of any firearm or ammunition illegal under federal statutes. His fate was sealed on June 11, 2025, when he was indicted by a federal grand jury, culminating in his guilty plea on May 21, 2025.
The case was investigated by the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with Assistant U.S. Attorney Matt Allen leading the prosecution. The U.S. Attorney Patrick A. Lemon of the Southern District of Mississippi and ATF Special Agent in Charge Joshua Jackson made the sentencing announcement.
This conviction is part of Operation Take Back America, a Department of Justice initiative aimed at eliminating cartels, transnational criminal organizations, and combating violent crime. The operation leverages resources from various task forces within the Department of Justice to safeguard communities across the nation.
Operation Take Back America, which includes Project Safe Neighborhood, is a testament to the Department’s dedication to curbing gun violence and organized crime. Mathews’ sentence serves as a stark reminder that the law enforcement community remains vigilant against those who threaten public safety with illegal firearms.
