TOPEKA, KAN – A careless act with deadly consequences landed 19-year-old Juwuan D. Jackson in federal prison Thursday. Jackson was sentenced to 18 months for involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of 16-year-old Kenyon Givens, Jr. on Fort Riley. U.S. Attorney Tom Beall announced the sentence, alongside an order for Jackson to pay $5,000 in restitution to cover funeral expenses.
Jackson, who resided on the Fort Riley base at the time of the incident, pleaded guilty to one count of involuntary manslaughter. Court documents reveal that on September 11, 2015, Jackson’s reckless handling of a firearm resulted in the fatal shooting of Givens, also a Fort Riley resident. The incident wasn’t a tragic accident; it was a result of blatant disregard for safety.
The initial aftermath was clouded by deception. According to court records, Jackson attempted to mislead investigators, claiming an unknown masked intruder had forced entry into their home and fired the fatal shot. Military police were dispatched and unnecessarily delayed providing medical attention to the gravely wounded Givens while conducting a fruitless search for this phantom assailant and the supposed weapon. A full neighborhood search proved equally unproductive.
The truth, as uncovered by investigators, was far more damning. Jackson had been carelessly playing with a loaded .22 caliber handgun. He admitted to spinning the cylinder with his finger on the trigger – a textbook example of negligent firearm handling. The revolver discharged, sending a bullet directly into Givens’ chest. There was no struggle, no intruder, just a fatal lapse in judgment.
The Army Criminal Investigations Division and the FBI spearheaded the investigation, painstakingly dismantling Jackson’s fabricated story. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Robin Graham and Assistant U.S. Attorney Tony Mattivi skillfully prosecuted the case, bringing Jackson to justice. This wasn’t a matter of a simple mistake; it was a reckless act that cost a young life.
While 18 months behind bars offers a measure of accountability, it won’t bring Kenyon Givens, Jr. back. This case serves as a stark reminder of the deadly consequences of irresponsible gun handling and the importance of honesty in the face of tragedy. Jackson will have time to reflect on his actions, but the Givens family will forever grieve their loss.
