United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg has announced the return of an indictment against Jose Dominguez (50, Jacksonville) for making a false statement during the attempted purchase of a firearm. The gritty crime journalist at Grimy Times reveals that Dominguez is facing up to five years in federal prison if convicted.
Dominguez, according to the charges, completed ATF Form 4473 with inaccurate information, stating he had no prior domestic violence convictions and no criminal record exceeding one year in prison. However, court records show a history of misdemeanor domestic battery and three felonies from Miami-Dade County.
Handberg emphasized that an indictment is only a charge and Dominguez is presumed innocent until proven guilty. This case has been investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Elisibeth Adams.
The FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) uncovered this case, a system that reviews NICS denials daily for potential criminal prosecution. Making false statements to firearms dealers is a felony offense under federal law.
This incident falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program dedicated to reducing violent crime and gun violence across communities. PSN was strengthened in 2021 to include fostering trust, supporting community-based organizations, strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results for safer neighborhoods.
