Dothan, Alabama – A 36-year-old man from Dothan, Alabama, has been sentenced to over 15 years in prison following a guilty plea to federal drug and firearm convictions. Jamere Deshun Dowdy, a resident of Dothan, was sentenced to 188 months in prison by a federal judge.
Dowdy’s sentence follows his guilty plea for possessing a controlled substance with intent to distribute and being a felon in possession of a firearm. In addition, the judge ordered that Dowdy serve three years of supervised release following his prison term. Federal inmates are not eligible for parole.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Dothan Police Department investigated this case. Assistant United States Attorney Justin L. Jones prosecuted the case.
According to court records, on August 5, 2021, law enforcement attempted to stop a vehicle after observing a traffic violation. The driver, later identified as Dowdy, refused to stop. A pursuit ensued and ended when Dowdy’s vehicle became inoperable. Law enforcement searched the vehicle and found marijuana and a handgun.
Dowdy has multiple felony convictions and is prohibited by federal law from possessing a firearm or ammunition. The investigation and prosecution of this case demonstrates the commitment of law enforcement agencies to combating crime and keeping communities safe.
As a result of his plea agreement, Dowdy is facing a significant period of incarceration. The sentence imposed by the judge reflects the seriousness of the crimes committed by Dowdy and serves as a deterrent to others who might consider engaging in similar conduct.
In addition to his prison sentence, Dowdy will also serve three years of supervised release following his release from prison. This supervised release will provide an opportunity for Dowdy to receive counseling and other support services to help him reintegrate into society upon his release.
