Wasilla Resident Charged with Possession of Unregistered Silencer

Anchorage, Alaska – A federal grand jury has charged Wasilla resident James C. Riggs, 58, with the illegal possession of an unregistered silencer, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Riggs was charged with one count of possession of an unregistered firearm silencer, specifically a .22 caliber silencer. This charge is a felony offense under federal law.

The silencer was discovered in Riggs’ home during a search in connection with an investigation into the taking and possession of two bull moose that were illegally taken within Denali National Park in September 2012.

Riggs and three other South-central Alaska men were also charged with a violation of the Lacey Act in connection with the moose hunt. The Lacey Act is a federal law that prohibits the taking and possession of wildlife without a permit.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the investigation into the moose hunt was a joint effort between the National Park Service, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives.

James C. Riggs, 58, of Wasilla, is presumed innocent until proven guilty. An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is entitled to a fair trial at which the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
