BISMARCK – A former railroad employee from Illinois has been sentenced to 10 years and one month in prison for sexually exploiting a minor.
James Dwight Andrew Monego, 46, was sentenced before Chief US District Judge Daniel L. Hovland on April 10, 2017, after pleading guilty to one count of Possessing Images Depicting the Sexual Exploitation of Minors and Distribution.
The investigation began after numerous cyber tips led to multiple hotels where Monego was staying within the District of North Dakota as he traveled through the state for his work with BNSF.
The cyber tips indicated that Monego was using an account on a website called ‘Chatstep’ to communicate with other individuals with whom he would trade images and videos depicting the sexual assault of children.
Monego was caught and brought to justice through the tireless efforts of the Department of Homeland Security Investigations and the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigations.
Assistant US Attorney Gary Delorme prosecuted the case, ensuring that Monego faced the full weight of the law for his heinous crimes.
Monego was also sentenced to serve 10 years of supervised release, pay restitution in the amount of $1500, and pay a $200 special assessment to the Crime Victims’ Fund.
This case serves as a stark reminder that those who prey on the vulnerable will be brought to justice and held accountable for their actions.
