Joshua Barber, Attempted Sexual Exploitation of a Minor, Florida 2026

⏱ 2 min read

Joshua Barber, a 39-year-old Pennsylvania man, has been indicted for a slew of child exploitation crimes in Alachua County, Florida. The charges include attempted sexual exploitation of a minor, attempted coercion and enticement of a minor, cyberstalking, and threatening communications. Barber’s alleged crimes took place in Florida, despite him residing in Butler, Pennsylvania. The investigation, which led to the indictment, was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations, the Gainesville Police Department, and the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office.

The indictment, announced by United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida John P. Heekin, charges Barber with a total of 10 counts. If convicted, he faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years’ imprisonment, and up to life imprisonment, on the first count. The other counts carry significant prison time as well, with up to 10 years for attempted coercion and enticement, and up to 5 years for threatening communications.

Barber has appeared in federal court for his arraignment and is scheduled for a jury trial on August 4, 2026. The case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. Assistant United States Attorney Christie S. Utt is prosecuting the case.

The charges against Barber are a stark reminder of the darker side of the internet and the importance of law enforcement’s efforts to protect children from exploitation. As the case moves forward, it will be up to the government to prove Barber’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
