Herbert Battle Jr., a 54-year-old meth kingpin from Hardee County, has been sentenced to 27 years in federal prison for conspiring to distribute and possess with intent to distribute over 500 grams of methamphetamine. Battle pleaded guilty on August 19, 2025, to overseeing a massive drug trafficking operation that smuggled high-purity meth from California to the Tampa area. At its peak, the operation received up to 20 pounds of meth per week, hidden in packages in the mail.
Battle’s criminal history dates back to 1989, and he has a previous federal conviction for conspiracy to distribute heroin in 2018. The case was part of the Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF) initiative, which aims to eliminate transnational criminal organizations and human smuggling and trafficking rings operating in the US.
The HSTF is a whole-of-government partnership that directs the full might of US law enforcement towards identifying, investigating, and prosecuting crimes committed by these organizations. The task force utilizes all available tools to prosecute and remove violent criminal aliens from the US.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Lauren Stoia, and US District Judge Virginia M. Hernandez Covington handed down the 27-year sentence.
