Michel Duane Dyson, a 46-year-old from Tallahassee, Florida, has been sentenced to 48 months in federal prison for faking his military service to collect Veterans Affairs benefits. Dyson falsely claimed to have served in the U.S. Army, including combat, and said he was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. However, investigators found that he was never an active or reserve member of any branch of the armed forces and was actually incarcerated in Massachusetts for a sex offense during part of the time he claimed to have served.
Dyson’s scheme was uncovered by federal law enforcement, and he was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida. U.S. Attorney John P. Heekin stated that Dyson’s actions were despicable and that the brave men and women of the Armed Forces have made sacrifices to preserve American freedoms.
The case is part of the Department of Justice’s efforts to combat fraud against the American people, including the work of the National Fraud Enforcement Division. The division is investigating and prosecuting those who commit fraud, supporting President Trump’s Task Force to Eliminate Fraud.
Dyson’s sentence reflects the seriousness of his crimes, and his prosecution serves as a warning to others who would attempt to fake military service for personal gain. The U.S. Attorney’s Office and federal law enforcement will continue to work together to protect the integrity of VA benefits and honor the sacrifices of true American heroes.
