Two Life Terms for Bulger

BOSTON, Massachusetts – James J. Bulger, the former leader of the Winter Hill Gang, has been sentenced for his role in a massive crime enterprise that spanned decades. On August 12, 2013, a jury found Bulger guilty of racketeering conspiracy and numerous racketeering acts, including murder, extortion, narcotics distribution, money laundering, and possession of firearms.

Today, U.S. District Court Judge Denise J. Casper sentenced Bulger to two consecutive life terms plus five years and $19.5 million in restitution. The case against Bulger was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Fred M. Wyshak, Jr., Brian T. Kelly, and Zachary Hafer. U.S. Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz hailed the sentencing as a major victory for justice and a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement officials.
