James Kiser, a 40-year-old Athens man, has been sentenced to 70 months in federal prison for his role in methamphetamine trafficking in the Eastern District of Texas.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Kiser pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge J. Campbell Barker on July 10, 2025.
The case against Kiser began on October 19, 2023, when he was arrested after selling approximately 34 grams of methamphetamine to another person for $500 cash. Further investigation revealed that Kiser has a lengthy criminal history, with 27 prior convictions for criminal offenses in Henderson and Smith counties.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jim Noble prosecuted it. Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs announced the sentence, which reflects the seriousness of Kiser’s crimes and the need to protect the community from further harm.
Kiser’s sentence is a significant one, and it sends a strong message to others who would engage in similar criminal activity. Methamphetamine trafficking is a serious problem in Texas and across the country, and law enforcement agencies are working tirelessly to disrupt and dismantle the networks that distribute this dangerous drug.
In this case, the authorities were able to take a habitual offender off the streets and hold him accountable for his actions. The sentence imposed on Kiser reflects the severity of his crimes and the need to protect the public from further harm. As the justice system continues to work to combat methamphetamine trafficking, sentences like this one serve as a reminder that there are serious consequences for those who engage in this type of criminal activity.
The Eastern District of Texas has seen its fair share of methamphetamine trafficking cases in recent years, and this sentence is just the latest example of the authorities’ commitment to combating this problem. With the help of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, the district is working to disrupt and dismantle the networks that distribute methamphetamine and other illicit drugs.
