Defendant Sentenced to 7 Years in Prison for Child Pornography Crimes

A 42-year-old Oswego man has been sentenced to 7 years in prison for distributing, receiving, and possessing child pornography, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York.

James M. Moody was sentenced by United States District Judge David N. Hurd to serve 84 months in prison, which is equivalent to 7 years. He was also ordered to pay a $300 special assessment and register as a sex offender upon his release from prison.

As part of his guilty plea, Moody admitted to distributing images of child pornography using a peer-to-peer file-sharing program. Investigators searched his residence on October 23, 2015, and recovered 60 images and 40 videos depicting child pornography.

The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Geoffrey J. L. Brown.

Moody’s sentence is a result of his involvement in Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the U.S. Attorney’s Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS). Project Safe Childhood aims to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as identify and rescue victims.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, this case is part of a broader effort to combat child exploitation and protect children from predators. The office encourages anyone with information about child exploitation to contact the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children at 1-800-THE-LOST or visit www.missingkids.org.

With this conviction, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York continues to demonstrate its commitment to protecting children from exploitation and abuse.
