PHILADELPHIA, MS – James Nelson Peeples, Jr., 37, of Philadelphia, Mississippi, will spend the next 222 months – over 18 years – behind bars after a federal judge handed down a stiff sentence for possessing a firearm while trafficking drugs. The conviction stems from a 2018 incident where Peeples allegedly threatened a woman with a handgun.
The trouble began July 15, 2018, when a Philadelphia woman contacted local police, reporting a man she knew as “P James” was menacing her with a firearm. Officers responded quickly and spoke with the woman before spotting Peeples nearby driving a black Honda Accord. As they approached the vehicle, officers observed Peeples attempting to conceal a handgun and stuff a bag of marijuana into his pants.
A subsequent search of Peeples and his vehicle yielded a disturbing haul: methamphetamine, marijuana, and a total of three handguns. This wasn’t Peeples’ first brush with the law. Court records reveal multiple prior felony convictions in Neshoba County Circuit Court, including convictions for drug sales and previous firearm possession as a convicted felon – a pattern of disregard for the law that clearly influenced the judge’s sentencing.
A federal grand jury indicted Peeples on January 15, 2020, and he eventually pled guilty to the charge of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. The plea, however, didn’t save him from a lengthy prison term. U.S. Attorney Darren J. LaMarca and Special Agent in Charge Kurt Thielhorn of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) announced the sentencing this week.
The investigation was a joint effort between the ATF and the Philadelphia Police Department, highlighting the importance of interagency cooperation in tackling violent crime. Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles W. Kirkham prosecuted the case, securing the conviction and subsequent lengthy sentence. This prosecution was part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) program, a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing violent crime through targeted enforcement and community partnerships.
PSN focuses on the most dangerous offenders and combines law enforcement efforts with prevention and reentry programs. The goal is to not only remove violent criminals from the streets but also address the root causes of crime and prevent future offenses. The long sentence handed down to Peeples sends a clear message: those who choose to combine firearms and drug trafficking will face severe consequences in the federal justice system.
