Grimy Times has learned that a Raleigh County man has pleaded guilty to a federal gun crime.
James Pratt, 30, of Beckley, West Virginia, was found in possession of a firearm during a traffic stop on February 25, 2021.
According to court documents, Pratt was a passenger in a vehicle pulled over by law enforcement officers in Beckley. A Browning, model Hi-Power, 9mm pistol was found by officers in the vehicle during the stop.
Pratt knew he was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to his prior felony convictions in Raleigh County Circuit Court for first-degree robbery on August 5, 2010, and child abuse resulting in injury on July 29, 2013.
Pratt is scheduled to be sentenced on February 3, 2023, and faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence.
United States Attorney Will Thompson commended the investigative work of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Department.
