Aiding and Abetting False Statement During Purchase of Firearm Lands D.C. Man in Hot Water
MARTINSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – In a move that could send him to prison for up to 10 years, Daquan E’mon Hunt, a 25-year-old man from Washington, D.C., has pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting a false statement during the purchase of a firearm.
According to U.S. Attorney William Ihlenfeld, Hunt admitted to making false statements in order to illegally purchase firearms in July 2021 in Berkeley County. The admission comes after an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and West Virginia State Police.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Lara Omps-Botteicher is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.
Hunt’s actions have put him in the crosshairs of federal authorities, who are seeking to hold him accountable for his crimes. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed will be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.
With a fine of up to $250,000 on the table, Hunt is facing a significant financial penalty, in addition to the potential prison time. The exact amount of the fine, however, will be determined by the court at a later date.
The case against Hunt is a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to the law when it comes to the purchase of firearms. By making false statements, Hunt put himself and others at risk, and his actions will have consequences.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert W. Trumble presided over the case.
Hunt’s guilty plea is a significant development in the case, and it marks a major step towards bringing him to justice. The outcome of the case will be closely watched by those who are interested in the enforcement of firearms laws in West Virginia.
