Defendant Sentenced to 8 Years for Selling Crack Cocaine
A St. Augustine man has been sentenced to 8 years in federal prison for selling crack cocaine, according to court documents. James Ray Crooms, 49, was also sentenced to 2 years in prison for violating his federal supervision by selling the crack. This sentence will run concurrently with his 8-year sentence.
Crooms pleaded guilty on March 22, 2018, after being accused of selling crack cocaine on two separate occasions. The first sale occurred on August 31, 2017, when a confidential informant made a controlled purchase of .4 grams of crack cocaine from Crooms in St. Augustine. The second sale took place on November 29, 2017, when an undercover detective with the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office made a controlled purchase of .5 grams of crack from Crooms.
At the time of the sales, Crooms was on federal supervised release for a previous federal conviction for selling crack cocaine. This latest conviction has resulted in Crooms facing a total of 10 years in federal prison.
The case was investigated by the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Assistant United States Attorney Laura Cofer Taylor prosecuted the case.
Crooms’ sentencing serves as a harsh reminder of the consequences of engaging in narcotics trafficking. The investigation and prosecution of this case demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement agencies to combating the scourge of crack cocaine in our community.
As a result of this conviction, Crooms will be required to serve 8 years in federal prison, followed by a period of supervised release. The sentence serves as a warning to those who would engage in similar activities, and a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies to keeping our community safe.
