Meth Conspiracy Lands Iowa Man Behind Bars
In a major blow to the Fort Dodge, Iowa, community, 53-year-old James Souder has been sentenced to 14 years in federal prison for his involvement in a methamphetamine conspiracy. The conviction marks the latest chapter in a long history of drug-related offenses for Souder.
According to court records, Souder was convicted of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, a felony offense that has landed him in hot water before. In 2015, he was convicted of possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver in the Iowa District Court for Greene County.
The methamphetamine conspiracy, which took place from July 2018 to June 2020, saw Souder and his associates distribute nearly 50 pounds of the highly addictive substance in the Fort Dodge area. Between August and November 2018, Souder’s involvement in the conspiracy continued to escalate, with evidence pointing to his key role in the operation.
At the sentencing hearing, held before United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand on March 9, 2021, the severity of Souder’s crimes was laid bare. In addition to the 14-year prison sentence, Souder will also be required to serve a 7-year term of supervised release upon his release from prison.
The case against Souder was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Shawn S. Wehde and investigated by a coalition of law enforcement agencies, including the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, the Fort Dodge Police Department, the Webster County Sheriff’s Department, and the Iowa DCI Criminalistics Laboratory.
Souder remains in the custody of the United States Marshal Service until he can be transferred to a federal prison. The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of methamphetamine on communities across the country and the importance of continued efforts to combat the scourge of drug trafficking.
