Fentanyl Trafficking Ring Busted in Alabama
A major blow to the fentanyl trafficking scene in Alabama was dealt recently when James Walker Stewart, 38, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in the crime. According to court documents, Stewart was arrested on November 18, 2023, after a traffic stop in Atmore, Alabama, where agents found him in possession of a half kilogram of bulk fentanyl, a small amount of methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia.
Stewart admitted to coordinating the fentanyl transaction with coconspirators Zachary Heaton Thaggard and Justin Brian Melton. Heaton Thaggard had previously been sentenced to 30 months in prison for his role in the conspiracy, while Melton was given a 210-month prison sentence. Melton brokered the deal using a contraband cell phone from within an Alabama prison.
Agents seized and searched Stewart’s cell phone, which contained evidence of his drug-trafficking activities with Melton and other coconspirators. The phone held text messages, pictures, and videos that supported the charges.
Stewart’s case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin Roller on behalf of the United States. U.S. Attorney Sean P. Costello made the announcement. The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
As a result of his conviction, Stewart will serve a 10-year term of supervised release after his release from prison, during which time he will be subject to drug testing and treatment. He was also ordered to pay $200 in special assessments. No fine was imposed in this case.
For those affected by the opioid epidemic, this case serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat fentanyl trafficking. The Grimy Times will continue to provide updates on similar cases as they arise.
