Jamie Patterson, Fentanyl Possession with Intent to Distribute and Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, Connecticut 2023

HARTFORD, CT – Jamie Patterson, a 25-year-old Hartford resident known on the streets as “Diddy,” is headed to federal prison for 54 months after pleading guilty to distributing fentanyl and illegally possessing firearms. U.S. District Judge Sarala V. Nagala handed down the sentence yesterday, adding three years of supervised release to Patterson’s term. The case underscores the ATF’s continued crackdown on violent offenders flooding Connecticut streets with deadly narcotics.

The trouble began back on June 4, 2021, when New Britain Police responded to reports of gunfire on Devens Street. While no one was hit, officers discovered a disturbing scene: dozens of spent shell casings and a disabled vehicle containing a discarded 9mm handgun. Patterson was quickly identified as a suspect, found hiding under a nearby car. A search revealed his DNA all over the weapon – a clear link to the shooting. This wasn’t just a random act; it was a sign of the escalating gun violence Patterson was involved in.

Less than a month later, on July 13, 2021, Hartford Police caught Patterson again, this time on Hazel Street. He was observed stashing something into a parked car, which a subsequent search revealed to be 170 individual doses of fentanyl – enough to kill many. Alongside the deadly opioid, officers also found a loaded .380 pistol. Patterson’s history of prior felony drug and firearm convictions meant this wasn’t his first dance with the law, and federal statutes came into play.

Federal law prohibits convicted felons from possessing firearms that have crossed state lines – a key component of this case. Patterson’s possession of both the 9mm and the .380 violated this law, adding significant weight to the charges. He pleaded guilty on February 27, 2023, to possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and possession of a firearm by a felon, effectively sealing his fate. Despite being held in state custody since July 2021, Patterson will not receive credit for that time towards his federal sentence.

The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the New Britain Police Department, and the Hartford Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert S. Ruff prosecuted the case under the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, a federal program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. The Justice Department recently reinforced PSN, focusing on building community trust, supporting local organizations, and strategically prioritizing enforcement.

This sentencing sends a message to those involved in the illegal drug trade and gun violence in Hartford: federal authorities are watching, and consequences will be severe. Patterson’s 54-month sentence serves as a stark reminder that dealing fentanyl and possessing illegal firearms carries a heavy price. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the ongoing efforts to clean up the streets of Hartford.
