New York Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for Double Homicide in Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA, PA – Jason Rivera, 38, of Brooklyn, New York, was sentenced to life in prison for his role in the kidnapping, extortion, and murder of two Philadelphia drug dealers.
A jury found Rivera guilty on all counts following a trial in October 2022. The case involved the recruitment of Rivera and two associates by members of the ‘Born To Kill’ street gang to forcibly collect money from three marijuana dealers who had failed to pay a substantial drug debt.
The victims in this case were brothers Vu and Viet Huynh, and their friend Tan Voong, who were drug dealers from the Philadelphia area. They owed over $30,000 to their supplier, Lam Trieu, and over $300,000 to ‘Fat Man,’ a supplier from California.
Rivera and his associates traveled to Philadelphia in August 2014, where they met with Tam Le, a member of the BTK street gang. They assaulted the victims and restrained them with duct tape and zip ties. However, Tam Le decided to murder the victims, fearing they would seek revenge if they remained alive.
The three victims were transported to the Schuylkill River, weighed down, stabbed, and dumped into the river. Vu and Viet Huynh died in the river, but Tan Voong miraculously managed to crawl out and flag down a passing motorist.
In addition to Rivera, five other defendants were federally indicted for this crime. John Dao, Lam Trieu, and Minh Nguyen have all pleaded guilty for their respective roles and been sentenced. ‘Fat Man’ pleaded guilty to a drug trafficking offense in the Southern District of New York, and Tam Le was convicted of murder and related offenses and sentenced to death.
Rivera’s sentencing marks the end of a long and complex case that involved multiple defendants and a web of deceit and violence.
