Identity Thief Exposed: Former Elections Commissioner Sentenced to Probation

ALBANY, NEW YORK – In a shocking turn of events, Jason Schofield, a 45-year-old resident of Troy, New York, was handed a 1-year probation sentence, along with a $2,000 fine and a $1,200 special assessment, for his egregious crime of identity theft.

Schofield, a former Elections Commissioner at the Rensselaer County Board of Elections (RCBOE), committed the dastardly crime by unlawfully using the names and dates of birth of voters to fraudulently apply for absentee ballots in elections held in Rensselaer County in 2021.

According to court documents, Schofield pleaded guilty to a 12-count indictment, admitting that he had unlawfully possessed and used the names and dates of birth of voters in connection with 12 absentee ballot applications he submitted through the New York State Voter Absentee Ballot Application Request Portal.

Schofield’s brazen scheme involved falsely certifying that he was the voter requesting the ballot for each application. In a staggering display of audacity, he even took personal possession of 9 of these ballots, while knowingly and intending that RCBOE records would falsely reflect that the ballots had been mailed to the voters.

The FBI conducted a thorough investigation into Schofield’s nefarious activities, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Barnett leading the prosecution.

Schofield’s reign of terror as an Elections Commissioner came to an end in December 2022, when he resigned in anticipation of his guilty plea.

The sentencing marks a significant victory for the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, who worked tirelessly to bring Schofield to justice for his egregious crime.

Schofield’s case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of upholding the integrity of our electoral process and the need for swift and severe punishment for those who seek to undermine it.
