U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro Hosts Anti-Violence Youth Summit in Washington DC

WASHINGTON – The streets of Washington DC are plagued by violence, but one event aims to change that. The 15th Annual Anti-Violence Youth Summit, held at the Catholic University of America in the Pryzbyla Center, brought together over 350 District youth to discuss the issues of drug abuse prevention, gun violence prevention, and mental health awareness.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro welcomed the participants, along with numerous local and federal law enforcement agencies and community-based organizations. The event’s focus was clear: to make Washington DC a safer place. A moment of silence was held to remember the young victims lost to homicide in 2024.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office presented the Youth Citizenship Awards to two participants who have been models of academic achievement and peer leadership. U.S. Attorney Pirro stated, ‘The most important thing we can do, in addition to our core mission, is to get out in the community to talk to young people.’ She emphasized the need to empower young people to protect themselves, and encouraged those in need to reach out to her office.

The Anti-Violence Youth Summit is a part of the Project Safe Neighborhood Program, a nationwide effort to reduce violent crime. Since its inception in 2011, thousands of District youth have participated in the Summit. This year’s event was made possible by the support of numerous partners, including the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation; the East of the River Family Strengthening Collaborative; the Catholic University of America, including its Department of Public Safety; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF); the Metropolitan Police Department; the Department of Homeland Security; and the D.C. Prevention Centers.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office thanks these partners for their support and collaboration. The event is planned and executed each year by members of the Community Engagement Section of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.
