DETROIT, MI – A Detroit man with deep ties to a West Virginia drug pipeline will spend the next 25 years in federal prison after being convicted of trafficking narcotics and illegally possessing firearms. Jeffrey Davis, 50, received the sentence from U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman yesterday, bringing an end to a case dating back to his July 2019 arrest.
Davis was a key player in the “TuffTeam” drug trafficking organization, responsible for funneling a deadly combination of firearms, fentanyl, heroin, crack cocaine, and marijuana from Detroit to the cities of Bridgeport and Morgantown in West Virginia. The operation wasn’t small-time. Federal agents seized a staggering 23 firearms, including *two machine guns*, during the investigation. The drug haul included 69 grams of heroin, 91.99 grams of fentanyl, and 215 grams of crack cocaine, alongside over $10,000 in illicit cash.
“Removing individuals who inflict significant harm on our community by dealing in deadly drugs and high-powered firearms is a top priority,” stated U.S. Attorney Dawn N. Ison in a press statement. While the official language softens the blow, the message is clear: federal authorities are cracking down on those who profit from misery and violence. This wasn’t simply about drugs; it was about the tools used to protect the operation and intimidate rivals.
ATF Special Agent in Charge James Deir didn’t mince words. “Jeffrey Davis sold poison in our community while armed with a firearm,” Deir said. “This sentence should serve as a clear message to all armed drug dealers in Detroit: If you pack an illegal firearm while peddling your poison, you need to pack your bags for prison.” The ATF’s Detroit Division led the investigation, with special agents Sherri Reynolds and Eric Miller spearheading the effort.
The case, prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys John O’Brien and Jeanine Brunson, highlights the inter-state nature of the drug trade and the ATF’s commitment to disrupting these networks.
