SWAN LAKE, NY – Jeffrey Herring, 27, has been convicted in White Plains Federal Court of robbing and senselessly murdering Michael Northcote during a home-invasion robbery on October 12, 2015. Herring was also found guilty of racketeering charges related to his membership in the Askari subset of the Bloods gang.
Acting U.S. Attorney Joon H. Kim hailed the jury’s unanimous decision as a victory for justice, stating that Herring and fellow gang members carried out the violent act with no regard for human life. Kim expressed gratitude to law enforcement partners, especially Sullivan County District Attorney James Farrell, for their unwavering partnership in bringing Herring to justice.
The court papers and evidence presented at trial revealed Herring’s role as a member of the Askari from 2014 to May 2016, during which time the gang engaged in numerous criminal activities including robberies, shootings, and drug dealing. On the fateful night of October 12, 2015, Herring participated in the robbery that led to Northcote’s tragic demise.
HERRING faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment for murder through the use of a firearm, as well as consecutive sentences for conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery. Additionally, he was found guilty of conspiring to violate racketeering laws and felony murder in aid of racketeering, which carries mandatory minimum sentences of 10 years and life imprisonment, respectively.
Scheduled for sentencing on November 16, 2017, Herring’s future lies in the hands of U.S. District Judge Kenneth M. Karas. The investigation was a collaborative effort between federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, New York State Police, Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, Village of Monticello Police Department, and Village of Liberty Police Department.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Michael Gerber, Lauren Schorr, and Maurene Comey. As the community seeks closure following this heinous crime, the jury’s verdict stands as a testament to the dedication of law enforcement in upholding justice for victims like Michael Northcote.
