Defendant Charged with Distributing Deadly Acetyl Fentanyl in Montgomery County
A devastating crime has shaken the Silver Spring community, as a 44-year-old man stands accused of distributing a deadly synthetic opioid that claimed the life of a local resident. According to court documents, Jeffrey Sean Nazari allegedly sold acetyl fentanyl, a controlled substance analogue, to an individual who later died after using the substance.
The indictment, which was handed down by a federal grand jury, charges Nazari with distribution of a controlled substance analogue resulting in death, possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance analogue, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. Moreover, the indictment alleges that Nazari was a felon in possession of a firearm.
On January 4, 2015, Nazari is accused of distributing the acetyl fentanyl, which he represented to be heroin, to an unsuspecting victim. Following a search warrant executed at Nazari’s residence, investigators discovered further evidence of the alleged crime, including a .380 caliber handgun.
The indictment carries severe penalties, including a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years and up to life in prison for distribution of acetyl fentanyl with death resulting. Additionally, Nazari faces up to 20 years in prison for possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance analogue, a minimum of five years, consecutive to any other sentence, and up to life in prison for possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and up to 10 years in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
While an indictment is not a finding of guilt, the charges against Nazari carry significant consequences. The investigation and prosecution of this case have been praised by United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein, who thanked the DEA, Montgomery County Police Department, and the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office for their tireless efforts.
A court appearance has not been scheduled, but Nazari is currently detained on related state charges. As the case unfolds, the community remains on edge, seeking justice for the victim and a safer tomorrow for all.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Arun G. Rao and Nicolas A. Mitchell. The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
