A Fort Dodge man is headed back to federal prison after violating the terms of his supervised release, according to a federal court ruling. Jeremiah Preston, 40, was sentenced to 36 months in prison by United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand in Sioux City.
Preston was previously convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm and distribution of a controlled substance. He was sentenced to 84 months’ imprisonment and began his term of supervised release in October 2022.
However, evidence at the hearings showed that Preston began violating multiple conditions of his supervised release shortly after his release from prison. In January 2023, during a traffic stop, Preston was found with two ounces of methamphetamine, which he intended to distribute to others.
Preston was sentenced to 36 months’ imprisonment, in addition to a two-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.
Preston is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Shawn S. Wehde and investigated by the U.S. Probation Office, the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Webster County Sheriff’s Office, and the Fort Dodge Police Department.
Preston’s case highlights the importance of adhering to the terms of supervised release. His actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the law and put the community at risk.
