Jeremie Calo, Resisting Coast Guard, Florida 2024

MIAMI – In a shocking display of defiance, Jeremie Calo, a 35-year-old Key West resident, has been sentenced to three months in federal prison for resisting Coast Guard rescue attempts in South Beach. According to court filings, the Coast Guard approached a small vessel with six people on board, including Calo, in August 2022.

The occupants of the vessel were not wearing life jackets, and the Coast Guard officers ordered them to disembark and board a Coast Guard vessel for safety. However, Calo refused to comply, leading to a tense standoff that lasted for over two hours. He physically resisted being assisted back into the Coast Guard boat, slapping away the hands of an assisting officer.

The incident, which took place on August 2022, near South Beach in Biscayne Bay, has left authorities stunned. Jeremie Calo, the sole occupant who refused to comply with the Coast Guard’s rescue attempts, was eventually forced to disembark and was taken into custody.

‘This was an extremely reckless and dangerous situation,’ said authorities. ‘The Coast Guard officers were simply trying to ensure the safety of everyone on board, and Mr. Calo’s actions put everyone at risk.’

Jeremie Calo, 35, was sentenced to three months in prison, to be followed by one year of supervised release, including seven months of home detention, and a $2,000 fine. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida and the Coast Guard Investigative Service (CGIS) investigated the matter.
