RAPID CITY – A 29-year-old Kyle man has been sentenced to federal prison for causing a death on the Pine Ridge Reservation.
Jeremy Red Owl was sentenced to two years and nine months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release on each count, with the sentences ordered to run concurrently.
Red Owl was also ordered to pay a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and restitution to the family of the victim.
Red Owl was indicted for Involuntary Manslaughter and Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person by a federal grand jury in November of 2024. He pleaded guilty on January 29, 2025.
According to court documents, Red Owl was riding in the backseat of a moving vehicle while he was under the influence of cocaine and in possession of a loaded firearm. He leaned over, causing the firearm to inadvertently discharge, striking and killing the driver.
This matter was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office because the Major Crimes Act, a federal statute, mandates that certain violent crimes alleged to have occurred in Indian Country be prosecuted in Federal court as opposed to State court.
This case was investigated by the FBI and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigations Division. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Schroeder prosecuted the case.
Red Owl was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
