Baltimore Felon Convicted of Illegally Possessing Firearm and Ammunition
A federal jury has convicted Jermaine Porter, 34, of Baltimore, Maryland, for possessing a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon. This is Porter’s second federal felony conviction.
Porter is currently on federal supervised release for a 2018 conviction for possessing a firearm as a prohibited person. On March 3, 2023, Baltimore Police Department’s Northeast District Action Team conducted a traffic stop in the 3900 block of Loch Raven Blvd. Prior to the traffic stop, officers observed Porter moving in his seat, which led them to believe he was hiding something.
Officers stopped Porter and removed him from the vehicle. In the vehicle, they found a light blue SCCY CPX-1 9mm handgun loaded with eight 9mm rounds of ammunition on the seat directly underneath Porter’s legs. This discovery led to Porter’s arrest and subsequent federal charges.
U.S. Attorney Kelly O. Hayes announced the conviction alongside Special Agent in Charge Charles Doerrer, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and Commissioner Richard Worley, Baltimore Police Department (BPD). Hayes commended the ATF and BPD for their work in the investigation.
Assistant U.S. Attorney LaRai Everett and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Keelan Diana are prosecuting the case. District Judge Adam B. Abelson has scheduled sentencing for Tuesday, December 16.
Porter faces a maximum of 15 years in federal prison. Actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties. This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in Baltimore.
U.S. Attorney Hayes also thanked the community for their support in reducing violent crime. The case highlights the importance of community-based organizations in preventing violence and gun violence.
