Jerome Frank Brown, Fentanyl Trafficking, PA 2024

Fentanyl and firearms: a deadly combo hitting Pittsburgh streets. Jerome Frank Brown, 50, of Penn Hills, Pennsylvania, has been hit with a federal superseding indictment charging him with possession with intent to distribute 400 grams or more of fentanyl and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon.

The two-count indictment, returned by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh, alleges Brown committed the offenses on August 19, 2021. At that time, he possessed the lethal opioid with the clear intent to distribute while also unlawfully handling a firearm — a violation of federal law that bars anyone convicted of a felony from possessing guns or ammunition.

Brown isn’t a first-time offender in the eyes of the law. The indictment hinges on his prior conviction for an offense punishable by more than one year in prison, which strips him of the legal right to possess any firearm or ammo. That prior record now amplifies the severity of the current charges.

If convicted, Brown faces a maximum sentence of life in federal prison and a fine of $10,250,000, or both. Federal sentencing guidelines mean the final punishment will depend on the seriousness of the crimes and his full criminal history — a reckoning that could land him behind bars for decades.

The investigation was a coordinated push by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, and U.S. Postal Inspectors Service (USPIS). Their joint work culminated in the superseding indictment, signaling federal authorities are tightening the screws on drug traffickers armed with guns.

Assistant United States Attorney Douglas C. Maloney is prosecuting the case. As for Brown, he remains presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. But the feds aren’t backing down in their pursuit of those flooding neighborhoods with fentanyl while packing heat.
