PHILADELPHIA, PA – Norman Copper, 32, of Philadelphia, is facing a potential life sentence after being indicted on multiple federal charges related to drug and firearms trafficking. Federal agents say Copper was caught red-handed with a significant quantity of methamphetamine and a small arsenal of weapons on January 24th in King of Prussia.
According to the indictment, Copper possessed methamphetamine with the intent to distribute the drug. But the feds didn’t stop there. They allege that during the same incident, Copper was found to be in possession of three semi-automatic handguns and a fully-loaded AK-style semi-automatic rifle – enough firepower to escalate a street deal into a full-blown shootout.
What makes this case particularly serious? Copper is already a convicted felon. The indictment states that he illegally possessed each of the four firearms despite a prior felony conviction, a clear violation of federal law. This isn’t just about drugs; it’s about a dangerous individual with a history of criminal behavior accessing weapons he’s legally barred from owning.
The bust was a collaborative effort between the Upper Merion Township Police Department, the Montgomery County Detective Bureau, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The ATF took the lead on the investigation, which culminated in Copper’s arrest and subsequent indictment by a federal grand jury. Assistant United States Attorney Lindsey T. Mills is prosecuting the case.
If convicted on all counts – one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, one count of possession of firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking, and one count of possession of firearms by a felon – Copper faces a maximum possible sentence of life imprisonment. That’s a hard line drawn by U.S. Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero’s office, sending a clear message about the consequences of combining narcotics and illegal firearms.
It’s crucial to remember that an indictment is merely an accusation. Copper is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. However, the evidence presented thus far paints a grim picture of a man allegedly involved in dangerous criminal activity, and the feds are prepared to make their case. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it unfolds.
