A 22-year-old man’s life was cut short after purchasing fentanyl-laced cocaine from Jerrard Santiago, a 44-year-old New Haven resident. Santiago, who has been behind bars since his arrest on March 30, 2023, was sentenced to 96 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for his role in the overdose death.
According to court documents, Santiago sold the fatal dose of cocaine laced with fentanyl to the young victim on May 18, 2021, in a restroom at the Mohegan Sun Casino. The victim overdosed on the casino floor and died approximately 11 days later.
Santiago’s crimes did not go unnoticed. On February 3, 2023, investigators made a controlled purchase of fentanyl and heroin from Santiago, and just 11 days later, they made another controlled purchase of fentanyl and cocaine from him.
Santiago’s guilty plea, entered on January 29, 2024, admitted to two counts of possession with intent to distribute, and distribution of, a controlled substance. An evidentiary hearing in April 2024 led Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer to conclude that Santiago knowingly distributed the narcotics that caused the victim’s overdose and death.
The investigation into Santiago’s crimes was led by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Mohegan Tribal Police. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ross Weingarten and Christopher W. Schmeisser are handling the case.
Jerrard Santiago’s sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of fentanyl-laced cocaine sales. As the people of New Haven and Connecticut continue to grapple with the opioid epidemic, it is essential that those responsible for perpetuating it are held accountable.
The case is a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies working together to combat the scourge of drug trafficking. As we move forward, it is crucial that we prioritize prevention, education, and support for those struggling with addiction.
