A federal jury in Oklahoma has convicted Jerry Dewayne Rogers, a 59-year-old Sallisaw resident, of multiple sex crimes against a minor. Rogers was found guilty of Aggravated Sexual Abuse in Indian Country, three counts of Abusive Sexual Contact in Indian Country, and one count of Sexual Abuse of a Minor in Indian Country.
The jury delivered the guilty verdicts on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, following a three-day trial that began on Monday, April 18, 2022. The evidence presented during the trial revealed that Rogers had sexually abused a child from the age of 8 to 13.
The case was investigated by the Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma prosecuted the case because the victim is a member of a federally recognized Indian tribe and the crimes occurred in Sequoyah County, within the boundaries of the Cherokee Nation Reservation, and within the Eastern District of Oklahoma.
Rogers is facing a mandatory minimum sentence of not less than 30 years in prison. The Honorable Timothy D. DeGiusti, U.S. District Judge in the United States District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City, will preside over the sentencing hearing once a presentence report is completed.
Rogers was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal pending the imposition of sentencing. Assistant United States Attorney Benjamin D. Traster was the lead prosecutor representing the United States.
The case serves as a reminder of the severity of sex crimes committed against minors and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates on the sentencing hearing.
