Jesse James Leader Charge, Failure to Register as a Sex Offender, South Dakota 2022

A Rosebud man has been sentenced to 13 months in federal prison for failing to register as a sex offender, according to a recent announcement by United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell.

Jesse James Leader Charge, 27, was convicted of Abusive Sexual Contact in October 2019. As a result of this conviction, he is required to register as a sex offender and to update his registration within three business days of relocation or changing employment.

However, between May 6, 2021, and September 14, 2021, Leader Charge failed to properly register as a sex offender and update his registration. This led to his indictment by a federal grand jury on September 14, 2021.

Leader Charge pleaded guilty to the charges on March 10, 2022. The case was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Abby Roesler prosecuting the case.

On June 13, 2022, Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange sentenced Leader Charge to 13 months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.

Leader Charge was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. The exact location of his imprisonment was not specified.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, failure to register as a sex offender is a serious offense that puts communities at risk. This sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of failing to comply with sex offender registration requirements.
